The Year of the The
idea started with the kids. For years,
the children of Cunningham have supported Heifer International with funds
raised at Christmastime (those boxes that they use to collect our spare
coins). Once
a year, their teachers would ask “what animals should we “purchase” with the
money that we have raised?” Last year, the children responded by asking “Why
don’t we buy the whole ark?” Heifer
International uses such gifts to provide a sustainable source of food for the
poor. A gift of $5,000 enables them to
“purchase” an ark full of animals and give them to the areas that need them
the most. An ark will purchase 2
camels, 2 pigs, 2 cows, 2 trios of rabbits, 2 donkeys, 2 beehives, 2 sheep, 2
llamas/alpacas, 2 flocks of geese, 2 goats, 2 oxen, 2 flocks of chicks, 2
trios of ducks, 2 trios of guinea pigs, and 2 water buffalo. Our Long Range Planning
Committee was looking for a project that could be adopted church-wide—one
that would challenge, ignite and inspire us.
Someone remembered the children’s idea. The Committee liked it and recommended it
to the Church Council. Our Council has
designated 2012 as the “Year of the Heifer’s website tells us that
it all started with a Midwestern farmer named Dan West.
West was distributing milk, one cup at a time, to hungry children during the
Spanish Civil War when it occurred to him that “These children don't need a cup, they need a cow.” West returned home to form Heifers for Relief, dedicated
to ending hunger permanently by providing families with livestock and
training so that they "could be spared the indignity of depending on
others to feed their children."
In 1944, the first shipment of 17 heifers left Heifer International has
adopted, as one of its guiding philosophies, the principle of “Passing on the Gift.” Recipients of animals from Heifer are
expected to become donors themselves and to pass along offspring from the
animals they receive to other families in need. A
gift to Heifer International is a gift that keeps on giving. What a wonderful way to carry
out the second great commandment, to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew
22:39). Join us this year as we
work to make 2012 not only a year that we will remember, but one that will
make a difference to the “least of these.”
(Matthew 25:40). |
